South Eastern University of Sri Lanka Celebrates 17th General Convocation with Distinction and Pride

The South Eastern University of Sri Lanka (SEUSL) proudly held its 17th General Convocation on the 3rd and 4th of May 2025 at the Main Auditorium, Oluvil. This momentous occasion was conducted in six sessions, under the auspices of the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. U.L. Abdul Majeed, and the administrative leadership of Acting Registrar Mr. M.I. Nawfer, in the distinguished presence of the Chancellor, Dr. Faisz Musthapha, PC.
Dr. Faisz Musthapha, President’s Counsel and Chancellor of SEUSL, presided over the Convocation Ceremony, which was attended by graduating students, their families, invited dignitaries, and members of the academic and administrative staff. The event celebrated the conferment of degrees to 2,077 graduates from both internal and external study programmes across diverse academic disciplines.
The convocation highlighted the academic achievements of students from the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Engineering, Technology, Arts and Culture, Management and Commerce, and Islamic Studies and Arabic Language. As the university’s most prestigious academic event, the convocation reaffirmed SEUSL’s commitment to academic excellence and its vital contribution to national development.

Day One:
The opening session, dedicated to the Faculties of Applied Sciences, Engineering, and Technology, featured Hon. Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, as the Guest of Honour. During this session, 172 graduates from Applied Sciences, 82 from Engineering, and 102 from Technology were conferred their degrees.
The second session celebrated the achievements of 314 graduates from the Faculty of Arts and Culture. Professor Seetha P. Bandara, Professor of Economics at the University of Kelaniya, delivered the Convocation address.
The third session was devoted to the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Arabic Language and was graced by His Excellency Khalid Hamoud Alkahtani, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A total of 342 graduates received their degrees during this session.

Day Two:
The fourth session honoured 314 graduates from the Faculty of Management and Commerce, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Senior Professor K.L. Wasantha Kumara, Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission, delivered the Convocation Address.
The fifth and sixth sessions were dedicated to the conferment of degrees upon external graduates. These sessions witnessed the graduation of 564 students from the Faculty of Arts and Culture and 123 from the Faculty of Management and Commerce. The sessions were respectively graced by Professor Manoj Samarathunga, Professor in Tourism Management at Rajarata University, and Senior Professor T. Velnampy, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Jaffna.
Recognising Excellence
Each session also included the awarding of medals and certificates to outstanding students from each faculty in recognition of their exceptional academic performance.
The convocation was attended by members of the University Council, including Professor A. Jahfer, Chairman of the Convocation Committee; Deans of Faculties; the Acting Registrar; Librarian; Acting Bursar; Professors; Senior Lecturers; Administrative Officers; academic support staff; media representatives; and non-academic personnel, alongside the graduates and their families.
In a testament to inclusivity and outreach, the proceedings were broadcast live via the university’s official website (www.seu.ac.lk), enabling friends, relatives, and well-wishers to join the celebration virtually from across the globe.
